Alfred White’s aircraft crashed on take-off from Pamanzi, Comoro Islands when setting off on an ASW patrol over the Indian Ocean.
The following information has been researched by and is courtesy of The Black Country Society:
Stephen White was the son of Alfred and Sarah White of Brook Street, Stourbridge. Alfred Senior worked at the County Express and Alfred Stephen was their only child. He volunteered for the RAF and was sent to 209 Squadron which was equipped with flying boats. In 1941 they were based at Loch Erne in Scotland and flying newly acquired Catalinas on anti-submarine patrols. In March 1942 they were sent to East Africa where they carried out long range patrols over the Indian Ocean. They used other bases including Diego Suarez on Madagascar which had been seized from the Vichy French in May 1942.
