Elijah Stevens enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on the 7th January 1915. On his attestation paper he gave his place of birth as Quarry Bank, Birmingham, Staffordshire, his age as 26 years 9 months and his occupation as a Carpenter. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion.

Elijah served at Gallipoli from the 31st May 1915 where he was wounded in action on the 7th August 1915 resulting in him being transferred to Valetta Hospital, Malta where he was admitted with a bullet wound to his left knee on the 12th August 1915. On the 9th October 1915 he sailed for England where he was admitted to the 1st Southern general Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, on the 20th October 1915. The date of his discharge from hospital is not given but he remained in England until he was posted overseas to France on the 3rd August 1916 where he was killed in action just 2 weeks later on the 17th August 1916. According to his service records he was buried ¾ mile north of Pozieres and 4¼ miles North East of Albert (57°SE).
