Further Information About HILL Benjamin John
Benjamin Hill was born on 7th October 1894, the son of Samuel and Mary Hill of Quarry Bank. He entered Old Swinford Hospital on 17th December 1901 and left the school in January 1909 to go to N. Hingley, Iron Works, Netherton as a roll turner.
A letter received by Mr W. Brookes from Private George Hill, dated 1st March 1916 gives details of Benjamin Hill’s death on 29th February stating that they were on fatigue work, repairing trenches when the Germans began shelling the area. One of the shells burst over Ben’s head and the force of the explosion killed him instantly leaving not a scar on him. His parents received a letter from Lieutenant A.P. Whitehead of the 8th South Staffords with news of their son’s death by shellfire.
Benjamin’s Hill’s death was reported in the County Herald, 11th March 1916 and the County Express, 18th March 1916 when mention was made of his attendance at the Blue Coat School, Stourbridge.
Benjamin Hill has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
